P FORMAT

Definition: A 4x10 print. The panoramic format, perfect for wide shots.

PAINTING WITH LIGHT

Definition: technique of lighting large, dark interior. The camera, mounted on a tripod, is given a long time exposure. The photographers moves continuously around the interior, giving flash or battery powered photoflood illumination to the shadow areas.

PAL (PHASE ALTERNATION LINE)

Definition: A standard for video that is common in Western Europe, Australia and other countries.

PALETTE

Definition: The range of color or tone available in the imaging process, or a movable menu of tools or options found in software applications.

PAN

Definition:
1. A technique of moving the camera to follow the motion of a subject, used to convey speed or to freeze a moving subject at slower shutter speeds. Often, a relatively slow shutter speed is used to blur the background while panning keeps the moving object sharp.

2. See panchromatic.

PAN (PANCHROMATIC)

Definition: Designation of films that record all colors in tones of about the same relative brightness as the human eye sees in the original scene, sensitive to all visible wave-lengths.

PAN AND TILT HEAD

Definition: tripod head allowing the camera to be tilted up and down or turned through a 360° arc.

PANCHROMATIC

Definition: Film that is sensitive to all (or almost all) wavelengths of the visible spectrum. Abbreviated pan.

Definition: photographic emulsion sensitive to all the colors of the visible spectrum and to a certain amount of ultra-violet light. The sensitivity is not uniform throughout the spectrum.

PANCHROMATIC VISION FILTER

Definition: filter through which the subject can be viewed approximately as it would appear in monochrome as recorded by a panchromatic emulsion.

PANCHROMATIC( PAN )

Definition: Is a photographic emulsion sensitive to all the colours of the visible spectrum and to a certain amount of ultra-violet light. The sensitivity is not uniform throughout the spectrum.

PANNING

Definition: Moving the camera so that the image of a moving object remains in the same relative position in the viewfinder as you take a picture. Photographer: Lequita Burch

Definition: A photography technique in which the camera follows a moving subject. Done correctly, the subject is sharp and clear, while the background is blurred, giving a sense of motion to the photo.

Definition: technique of photographing moving subjects. While the shutter is open, the camera is swung in the same direction as the subject is moving. This creates a blurred background, but a sharp subject.

Definition: Moving the camera so that the image of a moving object remains in the same relative position in the viewfinder as you take a picture. The eventual effect creates a strong sense of movement.

PANORAMA

Definition: picture presenting a continuous view of the landscape, produced either by using a panoramic camera or from a composite of several images.

Definition: A broad view, usually scenic or a series of images stitched together to create a picture wider than what the camera is normally capable of capturing.

PANORAMIC CAMERA

Definition: Camera with a special type of scanning lens which rotates. Or a static lens camera with a wide format e. g. 6cm x 17cm.

Definition: camera with a special type of scanning lens which rotates on its rear nodal point and produces an image of the scanned area on a curved plate or film.

PANTONE

Definition: A company producing numerous color matching systems for print and computer applications. The PMS color matching system is commonly used to represent 3000 distinct colors through a numbering system.

PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM (PMS)

Definition: A printing industry-standard set of color inks.

PANORAMIC

Definition: A camera format which crops the top and bottom of the negative resulting in a long skinny photograph, with an illusion of vista.

PAPER BASE

Definition: support for the emulsion used in printing papers.

PAPER CHARACTERISTIC CURVE

Definition: describes a graphical relationship between exposure values and image density of a printing paper. Each brand of paper may have a different initial characteristic curve. The shape of the curve can be altered by different developers, development times, temperatures, and toning.

PAPER GRADE

Definition: Is a numerical terminological description of paper contrast:
numbers 0-1 soft;
numbers 2 normal;
number 3 hard;
number 4-5 very hard;
number 6 ultra hard.

Similar grade number from different manufactures do not have the same characteristics.

PAPER SAFE

Definition: Is a light-tight container for unexposed photographic papers, with an easy open positive closing lid.
