"C"-FORMAT

Definition: "Classic" format - one of the three selectable Advanced Photo System print formats; identical to the 2:3 aspect ratio used in 35 mm photography and suitable for most general-purpose shots. See also Aspect Ratio and Interspersed Aspect Ratio, "H"-format and "P"-format.

"COBRA" FLASH

Definition: Kodak's patented flip-up flash mechanism that creates distance between the flash and the lens to reduce red-eye; flash is located on the end of hinged lever that covers the lens when closed, and flips up to switch on the camera and deploy the flash. Also called Flipup Flash.

"H"-FORMAT

Definition: One of the three selectable Advanced Photo System print formats; identical to the 9:16 aspect ratio used in high-definition television (HDTV); suitable for wider shots than usual, such as groups; produces prints of 3. 5 x 6 inches or 4 x 7 inches. See also Aspect Ratio and Interspersed Aspect Ratio.

"IDEAL" FORMAT

Definition: film format in the proportion of 4 to 3, e. g. 6 x 4. 5cm. This ratio is considered the ideal shape by some manufacturers and many photographers for both vertical and horizontal composition.

"P"-FORMAT

Definition: "Pan" format - one of the three selectable Advanced Photo System print formats; a 1:3 aspect ratio that produces prints of 3. 5 x 10. 5 inches or up to 4. 5 x 11. 5 inches; suitable for panoramic shots and tall or wide subjects. See also Aspect Ratio and Interspersed Aspect Ratio.

"THICK" NEGATIVE

Definition: antique term used to describe a dense negative.

"THIN" NEGATIVE

Definition: antique term used to describe a negative lacking in density.

1-BIT COLOUR

Definition: The least number of colours per pixel for a graphics file. Each pixel is either black or white.

16 BASE

Definition: The 2048 x 3072 pixels image that is scanned and stored on a Photo CD and suitable for digital imaging and desktop publishing applications.

Definition: Image resolution of 3072 x 2048 pixels, which is suitable for desktop publishing applications.

2-STAGE SHUTTER RELEASE

Definition: A 2-stage shutter release is the industry standard among current electronic cameras. In order to activate the Autofocus mechanism and the light meter, slightly press the shutter release. Holding the release halfway maintains the focusing point and the exposure parameters (AE Lock), and allows for re-composition of the picture, if so desired by you. To take the picture, simply push down on shutter release all the way.

24-BIT COLOR

Definition: A digital color model that uses eight bits each for the three additive colors red, green and blue; creating more than 16 million colors.

Definition: 16. 7 million colours. Each pixel has 24 bits assigned to it, which produces 16. 7 million colours. This setting is best for displaying photographic images.

32-BIT COLOR

Definition: A digital image format that incorporates 256 shades in 8-bits for each of three color channels (RGB) and includes a mask (alpha) channel with a possible 256 levels of opacity.

4 BASE

4-BIT COLOUR/16 COLOURS

Definition: Each pixel has four colours assigned to it, which produces 16 colours.

64 BASE

Definition: Image resolution of 6144 x 4096 pixels that is the maximum size image file that is available on a Pro Photo CD.

Definition: The maximum resolution image file that is available on Pro Photo CD disks. This 4000 x 6000 pixel file produces a 72 megabyte color image.

8- BIT COLOUR/256 COLOURS

Definition: Each pixel has eight colours assigned to it, which produces 256 colours.

8MM

Definition: A common high end tape format. Current capacities range up to 25 Gigabytes.
