Definition: A chemical solution used between fixing and washing film or paper. It shortens the washing time by converting residues from the fixer into forms more easily dissolved by water. Also called hypo neutralizing (or clearing) agent

Definition: an early form of photography. A variation on the calotype process.

WEAK

Definition: a negative or print which is low in contrast or density.

WEB OPTIMIZATION

Definition: When a photo or graphic is produced its file size is often too large for use on a website. Optimization is acheived by reducing the size of a large file by converting it to GIF or JPEG format.

WEB SAFE COLOURS

Definition: Colours in which will display accurately and consistently on every version of internet browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, etc. ) or computer platform (PC or Mac). There are 216 web safe colours.

WEDGE SPECTROGRAM

Definition: an indication of the spectral sensitivity of a sensitized material by exposing it to a spectrum of light through a graduated gray wedge.

WET COLLODION

Definition: a much improved calotype developed by Frederick Scott Archer. A sensitized glass plate was dipped into a bath of silver nitrate and exposed while still wet. The improved speed made much shorter exposures possible.
