TONE

Definition:
1. To change the color of a print by immersing it in a chemical solution.
2. The lightness or darkness of a particular area. A highlight is a light tone; a shadow is a dark tone.

Definition: refers to the strength of grays between white and black. It relates to the brightness, lightness and darkness of the subject and is determined by illumination.

Definition: The degree of lightness or darkness in any given area of a print; also referred to as value. Cold tones (bluish) and warm tones (reddish) refer to the color of the image in both black-and-white and color photographs.
