Definition: Many modern autofocus SLRs have computer controlled metering systems. These systems can measure the light falling on different areas of the frame and then compare the pattern of brightness levels to thousands of stored brightness patterns in the computer's memory. In this way, the camera's meter is able to recognize the level of brightness and give accurate exposure readings, even under difficult exposure situations such as strong backlighting.
