Definition: Refers to the specification under which an image has been saved to disk or in which it resides in the computer memory. There are many commonly used digital image formats in use. Some of the most used are TIFF, BMP, GIF,and JPEG. The image format specification dictates what image information is present and how it is organized in memory. Many formats support various sub-formats or flavors.
