DIGITAL ENVELOPE

Definition: A digital "container" that surrounds an image with information (or metadata) in a file. Such information might be used to find the image, guarantee its authenticity, or limit access to authorized users. An envelope adds additional "overhead" to a file in excess of the actual "data" of an image.
