Definition: The correct orientation of a negative or transparency when the image appears as it did to the camera. Both negative and transparencies should be viewed with the emulsion side down and the base facing the observer. The emulsion side is dull-finished and very slight ridges can often be seen at the edges of the image elements. The base side appears glossy and smooth.
