RED EYE

Definition: The appearance of deep red dots in the eyes of human and animal photographic subjects. Redeye is is caused by the flash reflecting off the retina in their eyes. It can be prevented by adjusting the camera angle, being sure the subject does not look straight at the flash, or with a redeye-reducing pre-flash. The pre-flash causes the subjects' pupils to contract, reducing the visible retina and thus the possibility of light reflecting from it.

Definition: The bright red color of the pupil of the eye that sometimes disfigures pictures taken by flash. It is caused by reflection of the flash unit's light from layers of the retina rich in blood vessels. Red eye can be avoided by making sure that the subject is not looking directly at the camera or by using off-camera or bounce flash. Some cameras with built-in flash units have a red eye reduction control. When this is activated, the flash emits a beam of light just before the flash fires, causing the subject's pupils to contract, which lessens the risk of red eye.

Definition: effect encountered when light from a flash unit travels parallel to the lens axis during exposure.

Definition: The red glow from a subject's eyes caused by light from a flash reflecting off the blood vessels behind the retina in the eye. The effect is most common when light levels are low, outdoor at night, or indoor in a dimly-lit room.
